What does it take to write a novel, to bravely tell your own story, or to create a cohesive manuscript out of your collected poems or short stories?

Since 2003, I have worked with clients to produce and complete manuscripts across a variety of genres, including creative nonfiction, novels, memoirs, and short story and poetry collections.

I have taught creative writing at both the University of Virginia and Boise State University, and have published across multiple genres, including personal essays, travel writing, radio scripts, short stories, poems and songs. I have benefited from working with top editors—from The New York Times to the BBC—and have also had the honor of helping to edit a memoir that went on to win the Rome Prize (Will Boast’s Epilogue) and helping an emerging poet compile her first poetry manuscript for graduate studies. (Jenny Xie’s first book of poetry just won the prestigious Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets.) I am at ease working with fledgling writers as well as mid-career writers who could use a gentle push to complete a stalled manuscript.

My manuscript consultations are tailored to the individual needs of the writer. Some writers are looking for a trustworthy sounding board for discussing their ideas and dreams regarding a project; other writers are looking for structural and narrative advice or meticulous editing and proofreading. Some of my clients require only one or two consultations to move a project forward, while others find that a regular meeting time, once a month or once a week, helps them stay on track. I also help clients who want to explore their creative abilities as a writer through quick assigned writing prompts and other initiation tools.

Cost: $70/hour for individuals, including free phone / email conversations to discuss the writer’s needs and concerns, and to determine the best course of action. For manuscript editing I charge $35/hour (I average 10 pages of 250 words per hour).
